Hi everyone! Before starting this article, I want to wish to each one of you a Happy New Year! I hope 2021 is going to be a good year for all of us despite these difficult times. Now, let’s go to the heart of the matter. As you already know, my blog is about birds, but I also want to include a more environmental side to it. So today, I want to introduce you to a Canadian organization, the Canadian Wildlife Federation, and how to make your backward a “Wildlife-friendly Habitat”.
This organization‘s mission is to « conserve and inspire the conservation of Canada’s wildlife and habitats for the use and enjoyment of all ». Concretely, they’re doing awareness advertising through posts and videos on social medias, and they create awesome projects and programs for the communities. They also encourage people to do outdoor activities to admire what the nature have to give us, and to understand how to keep it in good health. As I just wrote before, one of those program is the Garden Habitat Certification. Basically, you can receive an official recognition that you’re backyard is a safe place for wildlife if you fulfill all of those points:

Offering at least one food and water source;
Offering a shelter;
Maintaining the backward with eco friendly ressources.
Pretty easy right?

To go more in details, you can offer foods to animals in general by giving them a variety of plants and trees that produce fruits, and you can also install bird feeders (you can see my previous article for more informations about it). A shelter can be a bird house, trees, and there is even bat dormitories to give them a place to rest during the day. By maintaining your backward with ecological ways, we mean to compost, collect rainwater, and not using chemical products on lawn for exemple.
If you receive the certification, you can even buy for a modest cost a sign to show to everyone that you make efforts to help the wildlife.
For more details about the application process, I invite you to go to this link: https://cwf-fcf.org/en/explore/gardening-for-wildlife/action/get-certified/.
I hope this article makes you realize that we can do little actions to help the biodiversity, even without this special certification.
See you in my next article!
